Managing Podcast Producer (Freelance / Contract)

The Oprah Winfrey Network is expanding our podcast slate with more engaging Podcast content aimed to super serve our Black female audience. Its is important that the candidate is familiar with the OWN brand and audience. The content of these original podcasts will explore the landscape of African American culture and its’ evolution. 

 

Title: Managing Podcast Producer (Freelance)

Position Summary: Your main responsibilities will include working closely with the Executive Producers and Associate Producers on a slate of shows, developing pilots and providing editorial feedback during post production. You will also play a central role in ad ops and marketing workflow, helping to maximize revenue and grow the business over time. Our ideal candidate has at least 7 years experience in creating, producing and editing compelling audio and familiarity with the current podcast landscape. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with the team to develop sound and workflow of the show

  • Pitch ideas and research show topics

  • Attend recording sessions, manage scheduling and booking, work with hosts and EP on editorial

  • choices, assemble episodes for handoff to engineer

  • Research and prep interviews, book guests and recording sessions, cut tape, write scripts, add

  • music, incorporate edits

  • Provide smart, targeted editorial feedback and a skilled, creative ear

  • Handle meeting all ongoing deadlines and managing fast turnaround as needed

  • Coordinate recording sessions, directing hosts in a studio and editing raw interview tape

  •  Work collaboratively in a team environment to create a supportive and efficient production process

  • Contribute to social media accounts and listener engagement

  • Other duties as assigned

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or equivalent work experience

  • 3+ years’ experience in content development and/or production preferred for podcast, terrestrial

or satellite radio, or similar audio medium

  • Hands on production experience in television, web video or related medium a plus

  • Experience with Pro Tools or similar audio editing software

  • Experience working collaboratively with high profile creative and editorial talent

  • Bonus if you have experience working across a variety of genres and styles: in-depth interview,

news, documentary, etc.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

● Act as main liaison between production and our marketing, publishing and sales teams, ensuring timely publishing, happy advertisers and effective marketing 

● Oversee APs and the production on all series - including assisting APs with scheduling and booking sessions, workings with hosts and APs on editorial choices, oversight into the assembly of episodes 

● Work with the Executive Producer to develop new show formats and recruit talent based on development priorities 

● Manage the creative process to anticipate problems before they occur, and lead hosts to do their best work using smart, targeted editorial feedback and a skilled, creative ear 

● Handle meeting all ongoing deadlines and managing fast turnaround as needed 

● Offer structural, technical and audio expertise to continue improving our content 

● Work collaboratively in a team environment to create a supportive and efficient production process 

● Be responsible for helping to grow the show’s audience and revenue substantially over time 

● Other duties as assigned 


Supervisory Responsibilities: 

● This role will manage a team of 2-3 producers and editors 


Minimum Qualifications: 

● Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or equivalent work experience ● 7+ years’ experience in content development and/or production preferred for podcast, terrestrial or satellite radio, or similar audio medium

● Hands on production experience in television, web video or related medium a plus 

● Pro Tools, or similar audio editing software, expertise required ● Reasonable flexibility in schedule (we respect work/life balance but sometimes must accommodate host’s limited recording availability)

● Must possess a curiosity and passion for podcasts and ideas for ways to move the medium forward as well as grow the audience 

● Sophisticated talent management abilities 

● Exceptional project management and organizational skills 

● A great ear for what makes for an engaging, smart, and entertaining conversation 

● Experience with high profile talent 

● A passion for determining what podcast audiences want to hear from our hosts ● Patience and ability to walk talent and guests through basic tech setups for remote recording 

● Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills ● Critical thinking 

● Social media management abilities 

● Ability to meet all deadlines while working independently 

● Keen attention to detail 

● Understanding of emerging, digital-first media models
